The People

Falkland Islanders, bloody minded individualists to a man...well...that’s a bit simplistic. The Falkland Islands has a tiny and varied population, aside from the local population there are a lot of immigrants, predominantly from Britain, Saint Helena and Chile.

There’s no indigenous population but many of the old Falkland families have been here forever (or near enough). What makes it special is the community. If you’re more familiar with modern first world society where you’re surrounded by thousands of strangers the place will seem odd, we all know each other and we all know each other’s business. It’s a laid back sort of community, there’s almost always time to stop for a beer ché.

As Eric Clapton said: “I walk down the street and there’s no-one there, I’m a stranger in one huge crowd”....Not in the Falklands Eric, no huge crowd, no strangers, come to think of it precious few streets as well.
